US Announcement Envelope

North America — primarily the United States and Canada — utilizes a dedicated "A-series" numbering system for announcement and social envelopes that distinctively sets them apart from both global ISO standards and commercial office envelopes. While business correspondence relies heavily on the numeric commercial system (like No. 10 or No. 9), the social, creative, and promotional landscape relies on these specialized announcement formats. These envelopes are specifically engineered to accommodate standard US paper sizes folded in half or quarters, ensuring an elegant presentation for invitations, greeting cards, small booklets, and premium direct mail.

Main Characteristic

Unlike commercial envelopes which are designed for high-volume automated business mail and tri-folded documents, US announcement envelopes are defined by their aesthetic proportions and structural suitability for heavier cardstocks. The system features a more balanced, less elongated aspect ratio, often featuring a deep square or pointed flap that enhances visual appeal. Nesting logic still plays a vital role here, but with a different purpose: smaller announcement sizes are precisely calibrated to nest inside larger ones to facilitate RSVP sets, which are essential for formal events, weddings, and high-end marketing campaigns.

Measurement System

Everyday sizes: The core US announcement envelopes—primarily designated as A2, A6, A7, and A8—are named using an "A" prefix followed by a number. It is crucial to note that these have no relation to international ISO A-sizes (like A4 paper). Instead, the numbers traditionally represent a progression in size scale.
The A7 envelope (5.25 x 7.25 in) serves as the undisputed industry standard for greeting cards and formal social invitations.

The RSVP and Nesting Logic: The numbering system elegantly accommodates a nesting hierarchy. For instance, an A2 envelope (4.375 x 5.75 in) is scaled slightly smaller than an A7 envelope. This precise mathematical reduction allows an A2 envelope to act as a pre-addressed RSVP return mailer that slides perfectly inside an A7 outbound envelope without bending or catching on the edges.

Common Usage:
  • No. A7: The dominant standard for formal wedding invitations, special event announcements, and standard (5 x 7 in) greeting cards. It perfectly accommodates flat (5 x 7 in) invitations and heavy-duty cardstock inserts. (A half-folded sheet of standard US Letter paper — 5.5 x 8.5 in — is too large for an A7 and instead requires the larger A9 envelope.)

  • No. A2: Primarily utilized for reply cards (RSVPs), personal stationery, thank-you notes, and quarter-folded US Letter paper sheets. It is the quintessential companion insert for the larger A7 envelope.

  • No. A6: Frequently used for medium-sized greeting cards, standard (4 x 6 in) photo prints, and small promotional booklets or brochures that require a more inviting, personal touch than a standard commercial mailer.

  • No. A8 / No. A10: Larger formats reserved for oversized invitations, corporate holiday cards, multi-page social announcements, or small event programs that cannot be folded without losing their formal presentation value.
